Dr. Kathryn Chval, Famed Guest Speaker
The Role of Positioning
Harry Caray’s Italian Steakhouse in Rosemont, IL

On November 7, MMC will continue its 2025–2026 season with Dr. Kathryn Chval, Professor of Mathematics Education and Dean of the College of Education at the University of Illinois Chicago. Her talk, The Role of Positioning, invites us to reflect on how the ways we position students, teachers, and even mathematics itself, shape learning opportunities and identities in our classrooms.
Dr. Chval is nationally recognized for her research on teaching mathematics to multilingual learners and on how teacher discourse influences equity and access. Her work—featured in leading journals and in her co-authored book Teaching Math to Multilingual Students: Positioning English Learners for Success—offers powerful insights into how language, expectations, and classroom interactions can affirm students as capable mathematical thinkers. She challenges educators to notice how subtle choices in talk and task design can either open or limit students’ participation in mathematics.
I [Deena Goldstein] have had the privilege of hearing Dr. Chval speak, and can attest that her presentations are both thought-provoking and deeply inspiring. She brings warmth, clarity, and a compelling vision for mathematics classrooms where every learner’s brilliance is recognized and nurtured. The November dinner meeting at Harry Caray’s in Rosemont will be an opportunity to learn from one of the leading voices in mathematics education today while connecting with colleagues who share a commitment to equity and excellence. Don’t miss this conversation—The Role of Positioning will inspire you to examine how you see your students, your teaching, and the power of mathematics itself.
