March Virtual Meeting
Maisie Gholson
Identity, Belonging, and Relationships in Mathematics
WEDNESDAY, March 11, 2026
7:00 PM

On WEDNESDAY, March 11, 2026 MMC continues its 2025–2026 season with Dr. Maisie Gholson, Associate Professor in the Marsal Family School of Education at the University of Michigan. Maisie explores how identity, belonging, and relationships shape students’ experiences with mathematics, and examines what it means to take students’ humanity seriously in our classrooms.
Maisie’s research challenges long-standing notions of what “counts” in mathematics learning by foregrounding children’s social relationships, identities, and lived experiences. She examines how race, gender, and relational ties to peers, teachers, and mathematics itself create different learning trajectories and opportunities, pushing educators to reconsider what is often dismissed as peripheral to mathematics instruction.
As a former high school mathematics teacher, Maisie brings both scholarly depth and classroom insight to her work. Her presentations are known for being rigorous, thoughtful, and enlightening, challenging educators to rethink mathematics classrooms as spaces where belonging and identity are central to learning.
This FREE virtual event on March 11, 2026 at 7:00 PM offers an opportunity to engage with one of the leading voices in mathematics education today and to reflect alongside colleagues who are committed to building classrooms rooted in care, connection, and equity.
